Aberdeen FC have loaned midfielders Heath Duncan and Max Pocklington to Highland League side Keith FC as manager Craig Ewen eyes another strong season from Dons youngsters. The duo arrive fresh from Aberdeen’s academy with high hopes after last year’s standout impact from Jack Searle and Zak To.
What’s behind the loan deals?
Keith FC finished seventh in the Highland League last season, losing just two of their final 22 matches. Their seventh-place finish marked their best campaign in 15 years, with Searle and To playing key roles in that run. Ewen believes Duncan and Pocklington can replicate that influence despite their youth.
“Heath Duncan is a guy that has the capability to unlock the door,” Ewen said. “Max Pocklington is a holding midfielder who can keep the ball well, break up play, and help us play forward.” Both players are still adjusting to the league’s physical demands, much like Searle and To did in their early months last season.
Can Duncan and Pocklington step up?
Duncan missed time last season due to a suspension, limiting his SFA Comet friendly appearances. But Ewen praised his final-third quality once he’s fit. Pocklington, meanwhile, offers composure in midfield and a shield against counterattacks. Their development is part of Keith’s push to compete with bigger-spending rivals in a tight Highland League.
Ewen isn’t banking on instant success. “They came from academy football,” he noted. “It took them a couple of months to find their feet last year. If they get anywhere near that, we’ll be very happy.”
What’s next for Keith FC?
Keith kick off their Highland League campaign at Forres Mechanics on Saturday. The club has also added forwards Ewan Clark (Turriff United) and Finlay Milton (Islavale) to bolster their attack. With a modest budget, Ewen is realistic but ambitious.
“We have moved a good step forward,” he said. “If we finish where we did last season, that would be a big success given our budget.” The Highland League looks set for another bruising season, with deep-pocketed clubs flexing their muscles early.
Aberdeen FC’s Premiership standing sits at 12th with zero points so far, adding urgency to their loan strategy. Duncan and Pocklington’s Highland League stint could sharpen their first-team readiness ahead of the Premiership’s return.
