Alan Burrows reflects on Aberdeen FC tenure after exit

Alan Burrows has spoken publicly for the first time since stepping down as Aberdeen FC's chief executive earlier this week. He cited family reasons for his departure after a period in the role that included the club's Scottish Cup triumph in May 2025.

Burrows reflected on his time at Pittodrie in a lengthy online update, describing it as an amazing journey and a privilege. He joined the club following one of its most difficult periods but found a workforce motivated for progress. "I reflect on joining AFC in the wake of one of the club's most difficult periods, but finding an environment and a workforce that was still so enthused and motivated by the plan for progress," Burrows said.

On-pitch and off-pitch progress

The period saw significant achievements. Aberdeen lifted the Scottish Cup in 2025, a career highlight for Burrows, and secured a third-place Premiership finish. The club also enjoyed consecutive campaigns in the Europa Conference League group and league stages, alongside regular trips to Hampden.

Off the pitch, the club recorded record figures in turnover, commercial revenue, retail, memberships, season-ticket sales, and player trading. Burrows was quick to credit the staff for this growth. "None of that is mine. It’s down to the talent and hard work of the amazing staff at both Pittodrie and Cormack Park, past and present, who I was exceptionally proud to work alongside," he stated.

Chairman Dave Cormack paid tribute, noting the club is now in a much better commercial position with improved fan engagement and infrastructure. Burrows expressed deep affection for the club, its people, and its supporters, mentioning meeting fans from Orkney to Dubai.

Current context and next steps

The reflection comes as Aberdeen sit in the Premiership. Their recent form reads one win, two draws, and two defeats from the last five outings. The team has conceded goals in the last 180 minutes of play.

Burrows acknowledged there were frustrating bumps along the way during his time, but said he gave everything he could. He plans to take a break before deciding on his next career step.
