Aberdeen’s Comeback Victory Over Hearts
Twelve months ago, Hearts triumphed over Aberdeen at Pittodrie in a League Cup match. This time around, Aberdeen were back home, fresh from their own successful run of four straight League Cup victories, while Hearts had just suffered a heavy defeat to Sturm Graz in Champions League qualifying.
Despite early pressure from the Dons, Hearts seemed to be handling the situation well until the 90th minute. Oisin McEntee's goal put Hearts ahead, and new additions like Amadou Ba-Sy and Lauren Mendy integrated smoothly with experienced players such as captain Harry Milne and Blair Spittal.
However, Aberdeen’s defense was eventually breached when Stuart Findlay fouled Toyosi Olusanya in the box. Nisbet stepped up to score the penalty and secure a red card for Findlay, giving Aberdeen the lead they needed.
Manager Robinson Praises Team's Character
Manager Stephen Robinson took over Aberdeen in March and has since made significant changes, bringing in 12 new players and letting go of several others. His team showed remarkable character and fighting spirit to overcome Hearts' early advantage.
‘We certainly showed the character and the fight that I didn’t believe was here last year,’ said Robinson. ‘It’s a good way to start but it’s one game, so we have to remember that.’
Analysis from Former Players
Willie Miller, former Aberdeen captain and manager, praised Nisbet's penalty execution: 'He had a long wait as well. He was calm, he was confident. It was a laser into the top corner.'
Michael Stewart, a former Hearts midfielder, criticized Hearts for their recurring mistakes: ‘They’re not taking care of business. The manager is an attacking type but he needs to get a balance. I was unsure on his substitutions. Why change the centre-halves? There’s elements of the performance that they’ve been crucially punished for.'
